Race For Life 2017

So, how many of you guys in the mental health community watched last week’s ‘Mind Over Marathon’? I really enjoyed it, and can’t wait for the second and concluding part this week. For those of you who don’t know, Mind Over Marathon is a two-part documentary film on the BBC. It follows ten people who suffer from mental illness as they prepare to run the London Marathon for the very first time. I’ll admit, I cried a couple of times through the first episode. Several of stories of the runners really hit home for me, and it was a wonderful feeling knowing that there are others going through something so similar to what I experience daily.

Now, I’m not exactly the fittest person in the world. My muscles have basically atrophied from years of me avoiding the outside as much as possible, but the documentary inspired me. No, I’m not running the London Marathon- that would be hilarious, I’d need a gurney after mile four- but I have signed up for my first ever Race for Life!

Race for Life are a series of women-only sponsored runs across the country, set up by Cancer Research UK to raise money for the research into all forms of cancer. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but always talked myself out of it because of the crowds, the potential embarrassment, and the fact that I’m about as fit as a potato. But, I’m determined to do it! It’s only 5k, so not nearly as daunting as a marathon! The run will be on June 4th, and I’ll be updating you guys through this blog and my twitter page on my progress as I try to train for the event. I’ve already managed to run a mile for two days in a row (woohoo).

I really recommend that you guys sign up for something similar. It’s great for motivation, for having something to look forward to, and for feeling like you’re doing something worthwhile. What could be more worthwhile than raising money for a fantastic cause?
